Birchbark biting is a traditional art practice that was made by Nêhiyaw and Annishinaabe women.  They made these creations to compete with one another and to use as a template for quill designs. Angelique Merasty from the Peter Ballantyne band in northeast Saskatchewan elevated biting into an artform.  She learned from her mother Susan Ballantyne and by watching competitions among the women near Beaver Lake, SK.  I learned about this tradition through the late artist Ilona Stanely also known as Rainbow Woman, who was taught by Angelique Merasty.
